JOINT CLEMATIS AND ROSE COLLECTIONS
There are a large number of private collections worldwide.
In France the Bagatelle Garden holds a collection of roses and clematis.
In the United Kingdom an ambitious joint project between the Royal National Rose Society and the British Clematis Society has led to more than 200 clematis growing with roses at the former's garden, St Albans, Hertfordshire. This garden is readily accessible by road as it is situated near the junction of the M1 and M25 motorways. A massive expansion of this garden is planned for the year 2000 when it is hoped to extend the rose and clematis collection as well as to include a clematis display garden. This new garden will be open throughout the year. The address is as follows: The Royal National Rose Society, Chiswell Green, St albans, Herts., AL2 3NR. The Royal Horticultural Society has a fine collection of roses and clematis as its Hyde Hall branch at Hyde Hall, Rettendon, Chelmsford, Essex, CM3 8ET. The garden is open from March to October. A private collection, open to the public, is at Haddon Hall, Bakewell, Derbyshire, DE45 1LA. It is open 1st April-30th September. Here there is a magnificent collection of old roses and clematis against the backdrop of a beautiful medieval building.
